Description
This is a view of a wall of what's left of the company store at Fayette State Park. Fayette State Park in Michigan’s upper peninsula along the shores of Lake Michigan was one of the largest iron smelting locations during the 1870s and 1880s. With its large hotel, It was also a resort destination for people to get away from the city and do some boating, hunting and fishing. The population at its peak was about 500.
Iron workers would make about one dollar a day from which they tried to put some money away for when there was a furnace shut down, or for the harsh winter months.
When the smelting operation shut down in 1891, some people stayed in the town, including commercial fishermen. The hotel operated well into the 20th century and in 1959, the state acquired the land and turned it into a state park. Restoration of the village buildings continues.
