The State of Michigan was originally commissioned as the USNS Persistent, which was a tactical sonar surveillance ship used by the navy to detect submarine traffic. It was later used as a drug enforcement vessel but it became apparent that it was not swift enough to keep up with the drug trafficking vessels.
It was then acquired by the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City, Michigan and is used as a training ship for future sea captains and engineers. The training allows for a four year degree certifying captains and engineers able to sail the largest freighters. The State of Michigan is used in the early exercises preparing the students for training on larger ships on the Great Lakes and in the ocean. The academy offers a four year degree.
The ship is shown here heading north toward Lake Huron on the Saint Clair River.

I have had the honor of having a photo of Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City, Michigan chosen for the December 2015 cover of Michigan History magazine. Indeed, as a life-long Michigander, in my portfolio you will find many images of our lovely Michigan shorelines, the Freighters that sail the Great Lakes, Michigan landmark locations such as Mackinac Island, Belle Isle, Greenfield Village, and more. I also had an image chosen in July of 2020 and again in 2021 to be included in the publication "Our Magnificent Planet" by Lenswork...
