Description
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison was made a national park in 1999 after being a national monument since1933. The Gunnison river carved out this canyon leaving cliffs up to 2,772 feet high. The igneous rock is generally dark and the canyon is very narrow, thus the name "Black Canyon". There are veins of intrusive rock throughout the walls of the park, making interesting patterns in the steep walls.
